WELL that's it then, isn't it? No donkeys in the stable at Bethlehem. No sheep. No oxen. Not even a flippin' cat. And if there were angels there, they kept schtum, no singing, no 'Gloria in Excelsis' no 'First Noel'. Not even a jingle bells.

That's what Pope Benedict says in his new book. And he even says Christ wasn't born on December 25 at all - but that the whole idea of celebrating his birth at the darkest part of the year is 'probably linked to pagan traditions'.

Well, that's just great. Out go the Christmas cards. Crib is for the bin. Carols have to be rewritten to get the animals and the singing angels out.
Liberal

Major job of work to be undertaken. Mind you, it has to be said that we've been a little bit liberal with the way we do Christmas anyway. For a start, half our cards have snow on them and, to be fair, the old white Christmas is rare enough.

As for the trees, well, we love our trees here in what was once holy Catholic Ireland. But who do you think is responsible for making them so popular? Martin Luther, that's who. And he was a Prod.

And if you want the whole story, the pagans loved trees at this time of year too, long before there ever was a Christmas.

Presents? That started in Rome when they celebrated Saturnalia, which was anything but a Christian celebration. But I suppose, at least, the custom of getting totally locked, eating a kebab and chucking up on the street is our own.

Anyway, it's a big disappointment to find out that there was no donkey, no sheep and no singing angels. Personally, I think Pope Benedict should have kept his counsel. I mean, what next? Is he going to tell us there's no San...

...course there is. Sure, who brought me the cowboy outfit when I was nine. In fact, I hear Santa is still very, very busy in Ireland giving out cowboy outfits. Who brought the train set when I was 11? Sure, who brought the iPod last year?
